Trip report

2015-04-03 SNOWY WALK at MAIN RANGE
Trip report:
Also in attendance Peter Drury (Scouting friend of Rod's).
Arrived late on Thursday night at Three Mile Dam. Missing Horses,Foxes and Rabbits on the roads.
Friday Started foggy but cleared to a beautiful day.
We did the car Shuffle leaving One car at Theiss carpark and the other two at Snakey Plain track head.
We got our first glimpse of Jagungal whilst having lunch on Snakey Plain. (No snakes only a leech!)
The afternoon walk was brief and when we arrived at Wheeler's Hut we found it occupied by Kim's relatives (small world) making it a less awkward share of the hut.
That afternoon we explored the diggings in the creek a couple of hundred metres away. Wheeler must have moved a lot of rock to find his gold(if any).

Night 1 Wheelers hut - Beautiful fine weather
Saturday we headed out overland to meet the Dargals Fire Trail near the Hell Hole Creek Fire Trail Junction then we headed south down the Dargals Fire Trail. It began with a 300m vertical climb over about 2km to Broadway top (1638m). The climb was exhausting but the track itself was spectacular amongst the tall eucalypts. Essentially a tunnel through the forest. We stopped for lunch on Broadway top where it began to drizzle. Somewhere along this section a feral Pig ran across the track in front of Beck. Coming down off the top we got some amazing exposure to the south with deep valleys just before the junction with Everhards track.
From the junction we needed to find a place to cut off the track to head to Pretty Plain Hut. We followed a ridge down to Pretty Plain creek. Somewhere in here it began to drizzle again. There are some foot pads along here but don't take the one that goes up the ridge behind the hut. it looks like a 4 Wheeler has made it's own path up the ridge and then down again to get to the hut. There is an alternate route around the ridge and up Bulls Head Creek.
Night 2 Pretty Plain Hut - Drizzle
Pretty Plain Hut looks very new and was assembled elsewhere and then helicoptered into place. We missed the Lunar eclipse because of the cloud but later in the night the cloud cleared for a while to light up the plain with moonlight.
Then next morning we headed north along the footpad keeping to the western side of the creeks and the Tooma River until we hit Hell Hole Creek Fire Trail. We went west along this until we met the Dargals Fire Trail, heading north this time. We stopped for lunch at the Tooma River Crossing.
Night 3 Patons Hut - Afternoon storms
A short afternoon walk found us at Patons Hut again with Kims "cousins". There were some rumblings from the skies so we set up tents quickly and spent the evening in the hut. Becky and the "cousins" played cards until the "wee small hours" (9:30pm). Not much rain that night but quite warm for the snowies.
Day 4 - 2.5 km to the cars - showers
The next morning the cousins left early and we had a leisurely but rainy stroll out to the cars by about 10:30am.
Out via Tumut where Coffee and some Pub lunches were enjoyed.
Thanks Rick and Kim for Organising another great walk.
