Trip report: | |
Present: Ros Barnes, Rod Burton, Mike Davies, Grant Elliott, Jo Pallister, Rick Pinnock, Dave Tweed Most of us arrived about 10 pm on Friday night, finding the hut in good condition. Around the property the grass is green but the dams are very low. Saturday Am: Once Grant had arrived we headed off to Island Cave to complete the survey training and mapping project that we had been doing with the members. We were in about 10 am and out about 3pm for a late lunch by the CL6 entrance. The rest of the afternoon was taken up with surface forestry compass and plane table work to fill in the shape of the hill over Island Cave. A point of interest was the small footprints in the dust of the cave which we suspect were echidna. To support this we also found some quills. Saturday night was spent around the fire in the cool glow of laptop screens crunching data. We picked up a few inconsistencies with readings and will re-measure on sunday. Grant left Sunday morning to get back for some family things happening that afternoon. Sunday the first order of business was to find the thermal spring. We drove past the hut, through 3 gates and stopped at the fourth. A short walk down the fence and over the fence at the river edge we saw a full flowing tepid spring emptying into the Belubula River. We then drove back to Island Flat and spent the day examining the abundant fossils of bivalves, gastropods and some corals. Most were in the northernmost end of the beds. A quote from Mike "blown away by the proliferation of fossils". We left about 3 pm and hit the traffic at Lawson. |
