Trip report

2012-03-24 Caving at Yarrangobilly
Trip report:
Ron and Rod travelled to Yarrangobilly during the day on Friday.  Grant and David went down after work on Friday.  It was necessary to camp because a storm a few months ago had succeeded in removing the roof of Cotterills Cottage.

On Saturday morning we headed for East Deep Creek.  The GPS co-ordinate we had brought us directly to Restoration Cave, so a bit of surface trogging was required to try to locate the East Deep Creek Entrance.  We located the lower entrance without problems but upper entrance proved elusive.  We went into the upper section, via the lower entrance, of the cave first.  Past the gate the decoration was superb.

We then went into the lower stream area of the cave.  Due to recent rains the water level was still up.  The stream was effectively sumping at a constriction.  Although we had prepared ourselves for wet conditions we had not prepared ourselves for a submerged squeeze.  A higher level bypass was located but the cave in this area showed minimal signs of dsisturbance and we did not want to mess it up by trogging through it.  The weather was also overcast outside and this was not a good omen for sump diving.  We decided not to proceed further.

Back up on the surface we looked for the upper entrance to East Deep Creek.  This time we found it straight away and wondered how we could have missed it.

Then we followed a cross country bearing to North Deep Creek.  We spent about 45 minutes in this cave exploring the rockpile to the pitch head.  As the day was getting on we decided not to go down it on this trip.

On Sunday after a cool start of -3 degrees we did a trip into Restoration Cave.  Rod and Ron took photos while David and Grant deployed the flashes.

A very enjoyable trip in a great area.
