CAVE SURVEYING COURSE - 13-10-12 FIRSTLY A BIG THANK YOU to the fellow Instructors who gave up their time to teach, show, instruct, disseminate, organise, speak, oversee, relate, demonstrate and articulate the finer points of there particular survey topics. ALSO A BIG THANK YOU to Joe from HCG for the background organisation, planning of food and venue and of course preparing and help in the eating of all the food .... the course could not run as efficiently without your organisation and cooking talents. Thanks also to Bungonia NPWS for allowing us access and to THS for printing of course material. After a later than hoped for start on Saturday due to the Conference room key M.I.A. we quickly set up our wares and got underway. Basically the course outline looks like this. Introductions Why map? Gear required and usage, especially sighting instruments Using Suunto`s practical. How to go about mapping a cave, booking, errors, tips, tricks, grades etc Sketching, tips and tricks, In cave mapping exercise Crunching data, map production, hand , electronic Software uses Use of GPS in cave related situations Forestry compass usage and ideas Plane table usage and ideas Forestry and Plane Table exercise Short software demo on what your typical software can do for you More eating It is a lot to cover in a weekend especially when we ran for an hour and a half after dinner. I would like to thank the participants ( some from SA ) for there valuable comments in the de-brief session. It will enable us to run better and more targetted courses in the future Rick |
