2011-02-11 | Myall Lakes at Shelley Beach |
Trip report: | |
The Myall Lakes National Park has 3 main lakes, the Bombah Broadwater which is connected to the ocean via the Myall River and Tea Gardens, Boolambayte Lake and the Myall Lake. The Broadwater is brackish while the top Myall Lake is quite fresh. The weekend started off well with 8 people attending. The plan was to camp at Shelley Beach on the Myall Lake. The weather was overcast but warm and water was great. While waiting for the whole party to arrive before setting out the wind picked up making the trip across a bit choppy. We set off from Violet Hill camping area in canoes and a tinnie for Shelley Beach. James and Angus set out on their big yellow canoe, Rod and John in single kayaks. Mike and Jo had arrived the night before and set up camp. Jo picked up Nicole and Will in the tinnie. Despite the chop, the water was clear and the sand clean and with the wind behind us we made good progress. We stopped at Tickerabit for a break and to change crews on the banana boat and to rest. From Tickerabit we headed straight to Shelley Beach. John lost his glasses enroute, and required some assistance across the lake, but within the hour we were all unloading our gear and setting up camp for a comfortable weekend. The predicted showers arrived and went. The boys were in the water most of the day so they didn't notice. The weather did mean we missed out on the great Myall sunset. The rain came down during the evening, but we had sufficient cover from a gazebo to keep everyone dry. The next day was very relaxing. Will had a few boat lessons and Angus spent all his time in or under the water. The trip back to Violet Hill after lunch was very good with the wind behind us again. We all agreed that it is a great spot to camp and we would definitely come again. |
