2010-12-30 | Overnight bushwalk and canyoning trip at Wollangambe Crater and Geronimo Canyon |
Trip report: | |
We commenced walking from Mt Wilson Fire Station shortly after 9.00am. We crossed the Wollangambe River near the start of Wollangambe One and headed up towards the start of Geronimo Canyon. The track on the north side of the Wollangambe to Geronimo existed but was far less obvious than on the southern side. From the start of Geronimo Canyon we headed towards AGD532920 on the Mt Wilson Map in untracked bush. The vegetation was thick and woody prickly scrub, especially going up the hill, and this made progress slow. We then headed towards AGD523925 but because we were slightly to the west of the ridge the vegetation was scrubby. Rather than head fully towards AGD523925 we then decide to aim more directly towards the crater. The vegetation we then encountered was even thicker but we did find several tributary streams with water that was very much appreciated in the hot conditions. We reached Wollangambe Crater a bit after 5pm. Because of recent rains Wollangambe Crater had a lot of swampy ground amongst its thick vegetation. But we managed to find a relatively dry spot and set up tents and flys and did our best to escape the mossies that were thick on the ground. The next day we set off shortly after 8am to avoid the heat of the day. We also stuck much more closely to the top of the ridge where the vegetation was less thick - although by no means clear. This made walking quicker and saved us a good 1 and 1/2hrs on the return back to Geronimo Canyon. Although to get onto the ridge we did have to cross the head of one stream (see the "path" photos below) that had extremely thick bush and was very slow for about 100m. The 4 abseils of Geronimo Canyon were then completed and we exited the Wollangambe River near the start of Wollangambe One. The Bell Road side is a better way to get to Wollangambe Crater. |
