“Yessabah 12 April 2008
Present: Craig Hainz (Trip Leader), Louise & Garrett Beisler, Tina & Levi Cukas, Jason Schmutter & John Donnauf, Mike, Jan, Liam, Zoe & Naomi Garben, Grant, Rebecca, Michael, Nick & Lara Elliot, John & Ros Barnes

After a week of rainy weather it was wonderful to see sunny skies again as we headed towards Yessabah. The paddocks were soggy so, with permission from the owner, we decided to park up at the house and walk down. YE-20 and the Bat Cave along with a few other small holes were quickly located and a lot of photos were taken in these. After lunch, most of the kids headed back to the cars and those remaining explored YE20/40 where many more photos were taken. Ros & Craig then exited and headed towards the top of the NW bluff to be rewarded with some panoramic views then the rest of us headed back to the cars.

After some refreshments & a dusting down we then headed off up into the mountains for a pleasant drive to stay in the hut at Kookaburra. We were greeted on our arrival by a sole gentleman who was camped near the front door of the hut with his gear strewn all over the front verandah. He wasn’t expecting that anyone would turn up & use the hut. Nevertheless a comfortable night’s stay was had by all.

Queensland Cave area 13 April  (We’ve always called this area Windy Gap –ed.)
Present : Peter Hull (Trip Leader)  Craig Hainz, Louise & Garrett Beisler, Tina & Levi Cukas, Allister Gee, Jason Schmutter and JD, Grant & Nick Elliott, John & Ros Barnes

We had a relaxed breakfast in the hut then drove off down the hill to meet Peter & Allister near Haydonville. Craig Sydenham was too ill to attend but he had given directions to Peter as to how to find the caves so, after a glance at some marks on the map, we all headed off down the main ridge that was surprisingly free of lantana to Rossiters Creek. On the way we spotted a friendly, medium sized diamond python. Four walkie talkies were then distributed & we headed off in different directions to look for the caves. Peter found the River Cave (SC-1), Craig  found a vertical entrance to another cave, & Allister found the Crystal Cave (SC-3). All these caves were entered & explored then it was time to head back. We headed back from the River Cave on a compass bearing towards the carpark and, again, an extremely small amount of lantana was encountered on this route.

Hills Speleos expressed their gratitude to KSS for organising & running this trip and organising accommodation in the scout hall & the hut at Kookaburra. They said they had a great time and look forward to another joint trip in the future.
