Trip report

2008-02-23 Mt Wilson Canyoning Weekend at Mt Wilson
Trip report:
Wollangambe Two Canyon – 23th Febuary 2008
Participants:
Rick, Graham, Murray, Rod, Grant R and Mark

Saturday morning we left the campground at 9 am only to find that the private property section of the fire trail had been closed for public use. We all bundled into Rick’s car and started our trip again from the fire brigade shed instead.  The trip down the Wallangambe one exit route was smooth with Graham and Murray having no major problems with the climb down section near the end.

When we arrived at the Wollangambe River we blew up li-los… some of us more easily than others. Poor Rod had to contend with a badly designed air mattress that he had borrowed from Mark.

The float down the river was quite quick with the river travelling at a reasonable speed. Rick braved the water in just a thermal and Rod was not impressed by the stability of his lilo so it was decided that it was destined for the dust bin at the end of the trip.

We encountered a few yabbies along the way and stopped for a some jump ins at the rock near the Serindipity exit track.

It was noted that the pool where Whungee-wheengee Canyon enters the river has filled with sand compared to this time last year.

By mid afternoon we had walked back up the hill and were back at the campground. The Pinnocks departed and the others camped the night ready for tomorrows canyon.

Bowens Creek North Branch , Lower Section – 24th Febuary 2008
Participants:
Rod, Grant R, Mark, Grant E, Richard M and Ros.

Ros and Richard arrived on Saturday night and Grant E joined us on Sunday morning.  We left the cars and headed down the fire trail taking the right fork heading along the ridge till we came to a large termite mound. Here we left the main trail and followed a smaller track on the right down into the steep gully which dropped quite rapidly and eventually joined us up with Bowens Creek. This entrance gully was very beautiful and got better and better as we progressed further down towards the creek.

The canyon involved three short abseils and a few short swims. The first abseil was from some slings around a tree on the right. It was a small abseil into a slot ending in a deep pool, which made you tread water to unclip. This abseil can easily be climbed around but is a good easy one for beginners.

The second abseil is from a mass of slings on the right and ends in a pool.
The third abseil was also anchored on the right from slings around a tree. It had a slightly trick start to position yourself for an abseil down a short waterfall to a ledge in a pool.

The canyon was filled with an abundance of ferns and mosses providing a wonderful backdrop for Grant to take his prize-winning photo at the bottom of the third abseil. This is a very nice canyon especially after the recent rains we had.

We left the canyon section and shortly after had lunch at the junction with Bowens Creek South Branch, providing a good spot to warm up and refuel. The exit track for this canyon was a further 100m downstream on the left and involved a steep walk up to a cliff line which has a break if followed to the left, then up a ridge to the fire trail we left earlier at the termite mound.
