Trip report

2006-04-29 Caving at Limeburners and Little Wombeyan
Trip report:
The purpose of the trip was to check existing info for the book on Limeburners. This required Limeburners Hill trogging, checking geology boundaries, bit of caving to check existing maps, take photos, and look for new caves (containing lakes and waterfalls)!

Most of the parties were starting from Sydney / Blue Mountains direction, but we started from Goulburn. The instructions were quite clear and we had plenty of time to get to the campsite well before night. Unfortunately we missed the turnoff at Ruby mine as the signs with the name of the track had been removed. After traveling another 5km or so a track to the right appeared which we had to take. This turned out to be the short-cut - Limeburners Rd (not for the faint hearted).

We safely arrived at eastern end of Limeburners Flat, crossed the creek and looked for the camp site. Unfortunately we did not go far enough west and a group of motocross bikers got the camp adjacent to the creek. The rest of the party arrived throughout the evening. The camp site was quite cold.

On Saturday we checked the location of LF 1 – 8, photographing the entrances for the book. We retrieved the log book from the ‘water proof’ container to discover if was in a poor state. Photos were taken of the log, to preserve it. John volunteered to produce another log for the site. Rick and Dave T trogged the surrounding hills to confirm the extent of the limestone lenses.

On Saturday night more people arrived (due to Saturday sporting commitments). The pretend 4WD making it in without any problems.

Sunday morning was a bit cold but the weather was fine. We continued the task of data collection with the 2 Dave’s completing a thorough trog up around LF 8. They determined that several outcrops marked on the map were probably one limestone lens. After lunch we went on a bush walk up the creek.

People packed up from lunch time and set off to beat the road closures for the repair of the Jenolin Caves Rd.
